Difference between Industrial Quality (IQ) and Cold Heading Quality (CHQ)

What is the difference between IQ & CHQ(RHQ)? 

Industrial Quality (IQ) steel is a general classification for steel grades used in various industrial applications, while Cold Heading Quality (CHQ) steel is a specialized type of steel engineered explicitly for cold-heading processes to produce high-quality cold-formed parts. CHQ steel meets stringent requirements for formability and dimensional consistency, making it ideal for manufacturing fasteners and other cold-formed components.  

Key characteristics of Industrial Quality (IQ) steel include:

1. Uniform Composition: The chemical composition of IQ steel is carefully controlled to ensure consistency and uniformity in its properties, contributing to its reliability and predictability in various applications.
2. Weldability: Some grades of IQ steel is typically designed to have good weldability, enabling efficient and reliable welding processes to join components.
3. Heat Treatment: Some grades of IQ steel are amenable to heat treatment processes, which can further enhance their mechanical properties, such as hardness and toughness.
4. IQ is melted to ASTM A29 for chemistry and the allowable surface imperfection is 3% of the diameter of the material. 

Some common uses of IQ steel include:

1. Automotive Manufacturing: IQ steel is extensively used in the automotive industry to produce components such as hood rod props, rivets, wheel bolts and other automotive applications. Its high strength, durability, and impact resistance make it ideal for withstanding the rigors of automotive applications while ensuring safety and performance.

Its corrosion resistance and high strength make it suitable for withstanding harsh environmental conditions and corrosive fluids encountered in oil and gas exploration, production, and transportation.

Key characteristics of Cold Heading Quality (CHQ) steel include:

1. Usage for CHQ: CHQ is utilized in similar ways as IQ however, it is selected by the customer when improved surface quality is required. This material is manufactured to more stringent standards and therefore is superior to IQ when manufacturing parts with more extreme upsets or and bends. It is selected by manufacturing where the expectation of their customer is greater. CHQ is a better option for more critical applications then IQ. 
2. Formability: CHQ steel is specifically engineered to have better ductility, allowing it to undergo significant deformation during the cold heading process without cracking. This is essential for producing intricate and complex shapes in fasteners and components.
3. Uniform Composition: Similar to IQ steel, CHQ steel is produced with even tighter control over its chemical composition to ensure consistency and uniformity in its properties. This helps maintain the desired mechanical and metallurgical characteristics required for cold heading operations.
4. Cleanliness: CHQ steel is often subjected to more stringent quality control measures to minimize impurities and inclusions. Cleanliness is crucial for achieving the desired surface finish and mechanical properties in the finished components.
5. Surface Quality: The surface of CHQ steel is produced to minimize surface imperfections and therefore improved surface quality as compared to IQ, which is essential for enhancing the performance and appearance of the final products. Surface imperfections can negatively impact the functionality and aesthetics of fasteners and components.
6. CHQ is melted to ASTM F2282 for chemistry and the allowable surface imperfection is 1% of the diameter of the material. There is additional testing such as upset testing done on the material at the hot roll mill to help insure, they meet this requirement during the rolling process.
